Well we are about halfway through the second semester and all I have to say is so far, so good. Actually it’s been more than good. Everything about college has exceeded my expectations: the classes, the friendships, the activities. Being involved in the Kelley School of Business at IUPUI was the best decision I have ever made.
Let’s compare a high school day to a college day. A typical high school day starts around eight in the morning where you sit through eight hours of classes with a little lunch break. I have no idea how I was able to survive that. Now a college day is completely up to you. You pick when you want your classes to start and when you want your day to end. You pick how long of a break you want. You pick everything. And not to mention, all the classes are classes that you are interested in. Of course, you still have a number of required classes that you have to take, but you can usually knock those out within three semesters. After that, they are all classes you hope to pursue a career in. This semester, I am taking one class that has nothing to do with business. That’s it. And all I have to say is, I absolutely love it.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my high school friends and keep in touch with them, some everyday. But in the little time that I have been here at IUPUI, I have made friendships that will last me a life time. I live in the Tower in the Kelley Community and boy did I make a good decision. First off, I live in a hotel. Just let that sink in for a minute. My roommate and I have a bathroom to ourselves. A bedroom twice size of an average dorm room. Second, all of my friends on this floor are business majors. We have classes together and will continue to throughout college. So you basically have your groups for anything and everything. How neat is that?
But one of the best things that college has to offer, especially Kelley, are the extracurricular activities. I joined the brotherhood of Delta Sigma Pi in the fall of 2013. I can honestly say that I was really nervous before I joined too. It was the day of the pledging ceremony and I still could not make up my mind whether I should pledge or not. But I decided to pledge and wondered what I was getting myself into. I got myself into some of the best friends that I have ever had. Delta Sigma Pi doesn’t just offer friendship though. Delta Sigma Pi is allowing me to grow professionally through our professional events. This may sound boring to some people, but it allows the brothers to get their foot in the door. It allows us to make connections that we may not have been able to before. Now if you pass up that, you might just be crazy.
College is not just a box of chocolates. These past two semesters, there have been struggles, some I didn’t think I would be able to get through. But I am still here, able to write this blog and tell you all about the wonderful things that college has to offer. So I hope that you have some of the same experiences too and find what you love to do, because I know I have.
