Scholarships and awards honor top Kelley business students

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – As the 2011-2012 school year comes to a close, the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis honored its scholarship and award recipients at a breakfast at University Place Hotel. A total of 77 students were honored with an variety of academic awards, as well as student athlete recognitions.

Graduating senior Andrew Welling received the most prestigious award conferred by the IU Kelley School of Business Indianapolis, the J. Dwight Peterson Key Award. This award is named after the 1919 alum who gave City Securities its name and served as its President and Honorary Chairman. It is awarded to the overall outstanding Kelley senior on the basis of superior scholarship, extracurricular activities, leadership and character. Welling, a supply chain management, marketing and international studies major, also received the Outstanding Supply Chain Management Student Award. He was active in student government his four years at Kelley Indianapolis and served as president. Welling is a part of the Operations & Supply Chain Management Club and he also mentored in the Business Learning Community.

The John W. Berry Memorial Scholarship went to Robin Lambeck, a 2012 direct admission to the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis. Lambeck is majoring in accounting and finance with a particular interest in cost accounting and different costing strategies at all levels of the manufacturing process. This scholarship was established in 1979 by friends and family of John Berry and is given to a student with a career interest in accounting or real estate. Berry’s daughter, Lisa Kelley, presented the award.

Accounting and finance major Andrew Fuchs is the recipient of the Construction and Financial Management Association Scholarship, which is given to an accounting or finance student interested in the financial aspects of construction. He also received a National Student-Athlete Award for students who excel both in their sport and academically. An avid soccer player, Fuchs has played for IUPUI at the Division 1 level for the last four years. Not only a great athlete he has also achieved inside the classroom. Fuchs is an accounting and finance major as well as a member of the Alpha Lamba Delta and the Phi Eta Sigma Honor Societies. He is currently working at Design and Construction, LLC as an account supervisor. After graduation he plans to earn his CPA.

The Crowe Horwath LLP Outstanding Accounting Student Scholarship was awarded to accounting major Rachel Haskell. The scholarship is funded by annual gifts from accounting firm Crowe Horwath and is given to a student majoring in accounting who exhibits great leadership skills. Haskell found her first job during high school at Rose Acre Farms, which allowed her to see many aspects of business. During the summer she was accepted as an accounting intern at the same farm. This summer Haskell plans to intern at Kocolene Marketing, an independent oil company.

Considered the top junior in accounting or finance, Nicholas Miller received the Financial Executives (FEI) Institute Outstanding Student Scholarship. Miller is interested in becoming a CPA and completing the IU Kelley Evening MBA program. He is currently under consideration for the 2012 Associate of the Year Award at Sam’s Club, where he is a sales associate. Miller would like to someday own his own business. Founded in 1931, FEI is a professional association for senior financial executives.

The Irwin Katz Accounting Excellence Scholarships, established by the firm of Katz, Sapper & Miller to honor founding partner Irwin Katz, are designed to recognize outstanding accounting majors. This year those awards went to Jordan Pfister and Kristen Wesolowski.

• Jordan Pfister recently was accepted into the Kelley Honors Program and looks forward to working for a public accounting firm. Currently Pfister has been successful in transitioning his family-owned company into an LLC.
• Kristen Wesolowski is currently President of the Kelley Indianapolis Cares, a charitable service learning organization, and the sophomore delegate for the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis Student Government.

Greenwood High School student Elizabeth Ziegler is a direct admission for fall 2013 and she’s the recipient of the Simons-Bitzer Scholarship. This scholarship recognizes an incoming direct admission freshman that has shown potential success in business. In high school Ziegler was involved in the National Honor Society, 4-H and symphonic band. She looks forward to starting her college career at the Kelley School of Business.

The Somerset CPAs Scholarship went to accounting and finance major Renice Kenny. After moving to the United States from South Africa in 1999, Kenney overcame a difficult language barrier and is proud to graduate from the Kelley School of Business in 2014. She discovered her passion for accounting through an internship at Covenant Christian High School. Kenny would ultimately like to become an accountant or financial manager for a non-profit organization that benefits children. The scholarship is awarded to a junior accounting major based on GPA and leadership through service.

Kelley Senior David Wohlreich is currently a resource management analyst for the IU School of Nursing as well as a teaching assistant at the Business School. He received the Indiana CPA Society Accounting (INCPAS) Honor Student Award, which recognizes leadership and academic achievement in accounting honor students from each Indiana college and university. Wohlreich also received the Outstanding Student Award for Accounting. After graduation Wohlreich will start the rotational finance program with Bosch.

The Ralph L. Swingley Scholarship, established to honor the memory of the longtime civic leader, recognizes outstanding students majoring in accounting. This year those students are Madeline Schultz and Christy Steinkamp.

• During Madeline Schultz’s tenure at Kelley Indianapolis she has received a multitude of academic achievement scholarships as well as being on the dean’s list for six consecutive semesters. A marketing internship in Barcelona, along with her minor in Spanish, will prove beneficial as she moves into her new internship at Plante Moran, LLP.
• Christy Steinkamp is a member of Golden Key International, Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Societies. Planning to graduate in 2013, Steinkamp is currently employed as a quality control assistant/machine operator with Lindal North America.

Thomas Flynn received the Tax Executives Institute Scholarship. Flynn is the Vice President of the IU Finance Association and serves as a volunteer at Holy Spirit Catholic Church as a preschool assistant. Upon graduation, Thomas is interested in pursuing a master’s degree in taxation.

The Richard L. Rogers Accounting Scholarship went to Cameron Gentry. Over the past year, full-time student Gentry has worked three different jobs and serves as treasurer of the IUI Accounting Association. Through this organization Gentry coordinated a successful presentation on white-collar fraud and was instrumental in inviting keynote speaker Sam Antar, a convicted fraud felon and former Crazy Eddie CEO.

The Michael Williams Endowed Scholarship was established by Mr. Williams to benefit deserving students from the Indianapolis area. This year the recipient is Terrance Corbett. Last fall Corbett completed an internship with Noble Consulting Services, Inc., an accounting firm that acts as an agent for various states’ Departments of Insurance. Following the internship, Corbett was offered a position with the company. He looks forward to obtaining his CPA and Certified Financial Examiner Designation, allowing him to act as a certified auditor of insurance companies.

The longest running scholarship at Kelley Indianapolis is the Indiana Motor Truck Association Gold Club Scholarship, which assists a student pursuing a degree in supply chain management. This year’s recipient is Levi Ragsdale, a supply chain management and management major planning to graduate in 2013. Ragsdale is currently employed with both CSK Construction as well as Serigraphics, and is looking forward to a career in supply chain management.

The William F. Buchannan Scholarship was established by Lawrence and Betty Magner in memory of Betty’s father’s contributions to the railroad industry. This award is given to an outstanding senior undergraduate student in the field of transportation. This year that is Douglas Jennings. Juggling a family life with two growing sons, a wife and a job working nights at FedEx, Jennings knew the goals he had set for himself were not going to be easy to achieve. His goal of becoming a graduate of the Kelley School of Business will be realized May 13. He says he’s not just doing this for himself, but to pass on to his sons the rewards of hard work and following your dream.

Lisa Houseman is a marketing and supply chain management major planning to graduate this December. She is also the recipient of two scholarships. One is the Gordon C. Miller Scholarship, established by George D. Miller to honor the accomplishments and contributions of his brother to the transportation logistics industry. It is awarded to a supply chain management student with proven academic excellence. Houseman also received the Indianapolis Traffic Club Scholarship, which recognizes students pursuing an education in a transportation or supply chain-related industry. She also received a National Student-Athlete Award for students who excel both in their sport and academically. Houseman is a member of the IUPUI women’s golf team and the Vice President of the Operations and Supply Chain Management Club.

The Dr. Roger E. Jerman Scholarship is endowed by the friends of Dr. Jerman, who is now retired. It is awarded to someone studying supply chain management and pursuing certification in the American Society of Transportation & Logistics. Xiyan Sun is this year’s recipient. Having moved here from China just five years ago, Sun has demonstrated her ability to manage new and difficult situations. Not only is she a double major in supply chain management and finance, she’s also a member of the Operations and Supply Chain Management Club and serves as Presenter of China in the IUPUI International Club. Sun also volunteers with visiting nurse services and the Day Spring Homeless Center.

Established to support students majoring in supply chain management, the National Association of Purchasing Management (NAPM) Haager/Wilson Scholarship was awarded to Dakota Deter. While working at the J.W. Marriott and taking 18 credit hours, Deter is committed to achieving his degree by May 2014. He is currently majoring in marketing, supply chain management and international studies, with a minor in economics. Deter’s academic achievements are noted by his membership in both Alpha Lambda Delta and Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Societies.

Recognized as an outstanding junior with a career interest in finance, Jim Plew received the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis Finance Scholarship. Plew expects to graduate in 2013 and is already proving to be successful. He is currently interning with Merrill Lynch as a wealth management intern as well as serving as a research scholar with Innovation to Enterprise in IUPUI’s Center for Research and Learning. Plew has been accepted by Oxford University, Jesus College, at Oxford, England for their summer 2012 study abroad program.

Kendal Ashby received the John P. Carney Scholarship, given to a Kelley student, with preference to those residing in the State of Indiana. Ashby is an amateur painter who loves the fine arts. Combined with her majors in marketing and international studies, she hopes to land a marketing job with a major art gallery. This summer Ashby hopes to obtain an internship in New York at one of its several art museums. Currently a customer service associate with the Shane Company, Ashby is also active as a student ballet teacher.

The United Postal Service (UPS) Scholarship is awarded to a Kelley student who has outstanding academic achievement. This year it goes to Cole Johnson, a junior who is very involved on the IUPUI campus. Johnson currently serves as a mentor with the Community Service Scholar Program, where he is the student leader for the Sam H. Jones Community Service Scholars. Johnson has completed an internship at the Ronald McDonald House and he also serves as the treasurer for the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity and is president of the Leadership Consultants with the Office of Student Involvement.

First awarded in 2009, the Delta Sigma Pi-Kappa Chapter Scholarship is given to students majoring in business or economics. Lydia Honeycutt received the award this year. She serves as a member of professional business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi and worked tirelessly to make their food stand experience at Lucas Oil Stadium a financial success. She is also a Senator for the IUPUI Undergraduate Student Government. Within her community Honeycutt works as a tutor with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Tutor Program where she helps high school students improve their writing skills.

Moe and Judith Silverman presented the Moe Silverman Family Scholarship to Junior Kate Pronina. Funded by One America, the award goes to a resident of the State of Indiana who has outstanding academic achievement and shows financial need as determined by the school. Pronina works as a full-time tax intern and is also a member of the Indiana CPA Society (INCPAS.) In fact, she was part of the team, which earned 2nd place in the 2011 INCPAS Case Study Competition. With one year remaining in her college career, Pronina can boast that she’s managed to get all A’s and it’s her goal to maintain this level of academic achievement. Long-term Pronina wants to get her CPA and work for an accounting firm.

The Elliott and Estelle Nelson Family Scholarship for full-time undergraduate students was awarded to Samantha Bredhold and Aaron Henson.

• As a high school student, Bredhold was a dedicated scholar and proven leader, especially through her experience on the Business Professionals of America State Officer Leadership Team. She is planning to graduate with majors in marketing and supply chain management.
• Aaron Henson believes that a trait of great leadership is a strong work ethic. As an example of that he is currently involved in creating a new organization on campus, Delta Sigma Phi, a new fraternity with the goal of diversified enrollment. Last year alone Henson volunteered with Service and the City, Indianapolis’s Day of Caring, Gardening for Peace and Jingle Bell Run. This year he has accepted the position of Service Site Leader for the MLK Day of Service and is a mentor for the Hub Program at George Washington Middle School.

Corey Stasen is the recipient of the two scholarships. The Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Scholarship, established by Bruce W. Laughlin (BS’88) of the Laughlin Financial Group in Indianapolis He also received the Victor E. Childers International Study Award, given by Childers to students admitted to overseas study programs in which they are earning credits toward an IU degree. This summer Stasen will study finance at the University of Strasbourg in Strasbourg, France. He recently received recognition for being one of IUPUI’s Top 100 students for 2012. A member of the Kelley Honors Program, Stasen has held at least one leadership position each semester since starting at IUPUI. A few examples include: serving as the founding treasurer of the Capital Investment Club, floor representative and treasurer for the Ball Residence Hall Council and most recently as one of the four students asked to participate in the school’s recent accreditation process with the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB.) Stasen says he uses three words to describe his work ethic: dedication, motivation and professionalism. He looks forward to a career in the finance industry, with the ultimate goal of creating his own business.

The requirements for receiving the Enterprise Rent-A-Car Scholarship are a commitment to community service, leadership, scholarship and work ethic. Freshman Kourtney Givens’s commitment to community leadership speaks volumes. Her current position as a Living Your Freshman Experience (LYFE) Leader allows her the opportunity to serve as a resource to freshman women living in Ball Residence. Last summer she also volunteered for and shadowed the founder of Real Women Moving Forward, an organization founded to empower and uplift women in all walks of life. Not surprisingly, Givens is planning to continue her education to purse an MBA along with a degree in social work.

The Klapper Family Foundation Scholarship’s endowment was established in1999 by the David Klapper Family Foundation. Its scholars are management students who focus on entrepreneurship or marketing students who are interested in retailing. This year’s recipients are Heather Kent, Stephanie Langenderfer, Christina Leide and Ivan Mojsejev.

• Heather Kent is a management and pre-dentistry major with a minor in Chemistry. Last year she was elected to be a Kelley Direct mentor for two incoming freshman and she continues to give back to the community by volunteering weekly at the Trinity Free Clinic. Her goal after graduating from the Kelley is to attend the IU School of Dentistry prior to a graduate study in orthodontics. Eventually she would like to open her own dental office.
• Stephanie Langenderfer is currently a product marketing intern with the Delta Faucet Company. She was also the marketing chair for the 2011 IUPUI Regatta. Langenderfer plans to graduate in 2013 with a major in marketing and a minor in music.
• Christina Leide began her college career at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, North Carolina. After moving to Indianapolis and starting her career, she decided to return to school to earn a degree in management. She applies what she is learning every day at Chik-Fil-A, where she has been promoted three times to manager. Leide wants to continue in the field of management and looks forward to graduating in 2013.
• Ivan Mojsejev earned a tennis scholarship at IU while in high school in Serbia. He has been recognized for both academic and athletic achievements by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports and Northeastern University’s Sport in Society. Mojsejev has received the IUPUI Transfer Scholar Award for four semesters, and the Building Better Men Scholarship from Delta Sigma Phi.

The Lawrence Magner Human Resources Management Scholarship was endowed in 2007 by Elizabeth Buchanan Magner, in memory of her husband. Mitchell Gauger is this year’s recipient. He is a member of IUPUI’s men’s swimming and diving team, where he has served as team captain. He has been named to the Summit League Conference All-Academic Team and the dean’s list every semester he has been at IUPUI. Working various jobs to help cover the costs of his education has been very important to Gauger, who has lifeguarded at the Natatorium and fetched bills and amendments at the State House. He plans to graduate in 2013 and pursue a career that will allow him to help others.

Nisreen Yasin received the Women in Management Scholarship, which recognizes a female student whose studies include a concentration in management or human resources management. Currently a member of the Kelley School’s Honors Program, Yasin is working toward majors in management and human resources leadership and a minor in leadership. She is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management, the Golden Key International Honor Society and the Community Montessori Fundraising Committee. Yasin’s goal after graduation is to become a compensation and benefits manager for a mid-size corporation.

The Geraldine S. Bernath Scholarship is given to a student who has demonstrated leadership on campus or in the community. This year that is Daisy Pham. A triple major in accounting, finance and international studies, with minors in economics and psychology, Pham plans to graduate in May 2013. She is currently interning with Ernst & Young as an assurance intern and she is Vice President of Information Technology for Delta Sigma Pi student organization. Pham is also a mentor with the Kelley Direct Admit Mentor Program, Vice President for the Kelley Student Government and a past president of Kelley Indianapolis Cares. She recently secured a full-time position with Ernst & Young. Pham aspires to become a CPA and return to Kelley to earn her MBA.

The Ginny Marzke Memorial Scholarship was established by many gifts from family and friends to honor the contributions of Ginny Marzke, who served as an academic advisor for more than 15 years, until her passing in 2000. This scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates a serious commitment to completing a Kelley degree while faced with multiple responsibilities. This award went to Amanda Raines. Growing up with a father in the US Navy, Raines attended more than 15 different schools, in five states and three countries. She transferred to IUPUI in 2010 and feels she has found a place and program that she truly loves. Amanda is double majoring in management and human resource management with the goal of going into a management position.

Nathan Welty received the Kelley Indianapolis Faculty Undergraduate Scholarship, an endowment created by contributions from faculty to recognize a student currently in the Kelley Honors Program. Hard work is nothing new to Welty, who says he learned from his father’s example. Last summer he worked three jobs in order to help pay his school costs. Welty firmly believes that work ethic and leadership are tightly tied together and that in order to be a good leader, one must exhibit a strong work ethic. Set to graduate in 2014, Welty has an interest in the financial marketplace.

The Kelley School of Business Indianapolis Underclassmen Honors Scholarship goes to outstanding students enrolled in honors courses. This year the recipients are Elizabeth Dunklau, Lorenc Qorlaze and Corrine Samples.

• Not only is Elizabeth Dunklau a triple major in accounting, finance and international studies, she is also working on a minor in political science. In January she joined the firm of Ernst & Young as an assurance intern and worked over 55 hours per week this past semester. In her spare time she is an IUPUI tutor and Vice President for Kelley Indianapolis Cares. Dunklau was recently recognized as one of IUPUI’s top 100 students for 2012.
• Sophomore and Kelley honors student Lorenc Qorlaze is also heavily involved in community service. As a freshman he tutored at the George Washington Community High School and was part of the finance committee for the Global Youth Day of Service. Currently he is interning at Mary Rigg Neighborhood Center as a job coach, where he assists people in building resumes and navigating the online job market. With a major in finance and supply chain management, his career interests lie in the world of finance, with the hope of one day working for one of the large investment firms.
• Graduating from Ben Davis High School in 2011, Corrine Samples had decided to pursue a business career early in her senior year. She’s most interested in the field of marketing. She has a passion for various types of communications, especially public speaking, graphic design and language. She looks forward to graduating and using her marketing knowledge to further the cause of animal welfare.

The Gene B. Glick Scholarship is awarded each year to a Kelley student who displays great work ethic, volunteerism and professional goals and who participates in extracurricular activities. This year the award goes to Ashley Hammersle. A finance and marketing major planning to graduate in December 2012, Hammersle recently accepted a full-time job offer with Express Employment Professionals. She also volunteers as a Vacation Bible School teacher.

A number of Kelley students received National Student-Athlete Award Certificates, presented to students who excel both in their sport and academically:

• Mitchell Gaugher is a men’s swimming three-year letter winner, having earned a spot on the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships this past season.
• Kristin Pierce is a women’s soccer two-year letter winner. She has played in 37 matches, making 16 starts, she had team-high four assists this past year from her midfield position.
• Andrew Saunders is a men’s swimming two-year letter winner. He was one of IUPUI’s top two in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke this season.
• Matthew Whicker is a men’s soccer one-year letter winner, having played in 17 matches and made six starts as a freshman. Whicker started his IUPUI debut in a 1-0 win over Liberty on August 27th.
• Jordan Woods is a women’s golf three-year letter winner and second-team All-Summit League performer this season. She owns the second best scoring average in school history.
• Peyton Zehner is a women’s swimming one-year letter winner. She was on IUPUI’s fastest 400 freestyle relay team of the year and was among IUPUI’s fastest 200 and 500 freestylers this year.

The Delta Sigma Pi Key Award goes to a graduating senior in the Kelley School of Business who has the second highest GPA. Finance and international studies major Alicia Brunson received that award. She was also a recipient of one of the Senior Scholar Awards, which are given to the top one percent of the graduating class. Those awards also include Angela Prizevoits and Ryan Satchwill.

Outstanding Student Awards are given to seniors based on scholarly achievement,
extra-curricular activities, leadership, community service and work experience. These students best represent the disciplines from which they are affiliated:

• Accounting: Michael Nanaji is a triple major in accounting, finance and international studies. He has been on the dean’s list for highest honors every semester, and he’s also a member of the Kelley Honors Program and an IUPUI Top 100 student nominee. Nanaji has been invited to join Beta Gamma Sigma, Golden Key, Alpha Lambda Delta, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Societies, plus the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. While in school he’s worked as a student and peer mentor while also being an active member in the Kelley Student Government, Accounting Club, and the Entrepreneurship & Capital Investment Clubs.
• Finance: David Wohlreich (see: Indiana CPA Society Accounting Honor Student)
• Human Resources: Kate Wright is a double major in management and human resource management, also serving as the Chapter Education Chair for the Indiana University Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management and a mentor through the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana.
• Management: Daniela Klaz is graduating with majors in management, supply chain management, marketing and international studies. Her academic achievements include receiving her Six Sigma Green Belt Certificate in 2011, being on the Dean’s Honor List since 2009, joining the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. Klaz was just recently recognized as one of IUPUI’s Top 100 students for 2012. She has served on the IUPUI Entrepreneurship Club, the IUPUI Student Foundation and the World Relations Group of IUPUI. Most recently Klaz was recognized with one of IUPUI’s most prestigious awards, the William M. Plater Civic Engagement Medallion, which recognizes students who have demonstrated exemplary commitment to their communities while exhibiting personal development and intellectual growth.
• Marketing: Karey Hammond is majoring in marketing and international studies and has been on the dean’s list since 2009. She is currently working as a marketing research assistant for Professor Mark Mayer as well as a corporate trainer for the Platinum Restaurant Group. Hammond is a member of the Kelley School of Business Undergraduate Advisory Board and a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society.
