Julie Manning Magid, professor of business law at the Kelley School of Business on the IUPUI campus, has been named editor-in-chief of the American Business Law Journal, the discipline’s most prestigious peer-reviewed publication.
The American Business Law Journal is a quarterly, highly selective journal publishing manuscripts that analyze legal and ethical issues affecting business across the globe. The journal, published by the Academy of Legal Studies in Business, selects top quality articles that make a significant scholarly contribution to the field of business law. Editors receive hundreds of submissions a year but accept just 12 to 16 for publication.
Magid has served as a reviewer for the journal since 2003, and in that time, she has been a member of the Editorial Board and has been recognized for outstanding contributions as a reviewer and an article author.
“It is an honor and a privilege to serve alongside other business law and legal studies faculty in this capacity,” said Magid. “In this role, I have the opportunity to bring outstanding legal scholarship to print through an interactive peer review process. There are emerging legal topics in business law: from blockchain, to the implications of the cybersecurity, as well as ongoing inquiry in areas from constitutional to international law, and all of it has an impact on business environments. It’s imperative for our scholars to make their valuable work available to others.”
“Serving as editor-in-chief demonstrates the success of Professor Magid’s scholarly work and publications on such critical issues as the intersection of civil rights and pregnancy and religious discrimination. It also speaks to peer recognition of her significant leadership in the profession and her continuous commitment to excellence,” said Kelley Executive Associate Dean Kenneth Carow. “It is an honor to work with a colleague with such an exquisite international reputation who shares her expertise not only to the profession, but also with our students and the community.”
Among Magid’s goals in her role as editor-in-chief is to bring more awareness to the business law scholarship hosted in the journal and the importance of quality peer review legal scholarship, so she says she will focus on ways to ensure promotion of the work the journal publishes.
In addition to her research and teaching, Magid serves as executive and academic director of the Tobias Leadership Center, which offers leadership programming, research, and collaboration for professionals across all sectors.
Magid holds a JD from the University of Michigan, and she practiced law in both Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis before becoming a full-time professor at the Kelley School.
Magid’s scholarly work considers employment law and women in the workplace, making an impact on women, workers, managers and businesses. She also studies workplace culture, including innovation, diversity and inclusion, employment contracts and restrictive covenants and privacy and ethics.
