The Kelley School of Business proudly announces a longtime faculty member in accounting will serve as the inaugural Katz, Sapper & Miller Faculty Fellow.
Associate Professor Bill Kulsrud, a Kelley faculty member since 1979, also serves as the chair of the Master’s of Science in Accounting and Master’s of Science in Taxation (MST) graduate programs at the Indianapolis campus.
“I am truly humbled and honored to receive this award. It was totally unexpected,” Kulsrud said. “Katz, Sapper & Miller (KSM) has been a longtime supporter of our accounting program and our students.”
“I believe this appointment and the firm’s commitment reflect well on the school as well as on the strength of both our graduate and undergraduate programs at IUPUI,” Kulsrud added.
David Resnick agreed. As managing partner of the Indianapolis-based public accounting firm, he is very in tune with the benefits of the partnership between KSM and Kelley.
“We’re very proud to support the IU Kelley School of Business. It’s a wonderful institution, and we value the important role the school plays in our community,” Resnick said.
Resnick also noted 19 of KSM’s 34 partners are Kelley graduates, and at least 17 more Kelley Indianapolis graduates have joined the firm since 2005 as staff accountants or interns. KSM also sponsors two annual accounting scholarships for undergraduate students.
With Kulsrud as the first KSM Faculty Fellow, the firm is hopeful its support will help “further provide resources to the Kelley School to attract and educate the next generation of business leaders,” Resnick said.
Kulsrud joined the faculty in 1979 after earning his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. He specializes in taxation and was instrumental in establishing the Kelley Indianapolis MST program, the only one of its kind in the state.
Kulsrud also has edited and contributed to three tax textbooks, currently in their 30th edition and used in more than 300 schools across the nation. His works serve as the basis for training done at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Internal Revenue Service. Additionally, Kulsrud has authored countless articles for respected academic journals on accounting and taxation.
Kulsrud has received more than 20 awards related to teaching excellence, including the prestigious Educator of the Year Award, given by the Indiana CPA Society and the Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence, an award presented to the top IUPUI faculty member who provides “the gift of instilling in students a love of learning and respect for knowledge.”
The KSM gift is counted as part of the $1.25 billion IUPUI IMPACT campaign. Representing the largest fundraising effort in Indiana University history, IUPUI IMPACT is focused on four major priority areas: supporting student success, excelling as a center for health and life sciences, championing civic engagement, and thriving as an urban research campus.
