The semester has been unique and challenging in so many ways. But the end is almost here. Friday, November 20, was the last day IUPUI students had classes on campus, after which we’ve transitioned to 100% online instruction.
As Kelleys anticipate the online transition and the upcoming finals week, I offer five online study tips, which are the methods I have been following throughout the fall semester to stay on track with my own virtual classes.
1. Stay organized: We have been at home since March. As days start to run together, staying organized becomes even more important. Have a planner, wall calendar or app where you write down all your assignments, exams and other deadlines. This will help you keep track of your work and also prioritize when things get really busy.
2. Set mini goals: More than larger semester goals, or class goals, I believe mini goals are very important. They comes in handy with larger assignments, like papers and term-end projects. Instead of approaching the task holistically, you break it down into multiple,
smaller tasks and set deadlines for each mini goal. This approach makes it easier on you and gives you ample time to work on the project. Also, it lets you do your best work because you haven’t rushed the process.
3. Create a workspace: It is extremely important to have a designated workspace, where you only work. In a time where we live, work and eat in the same place, having a separate area for work can help create boundaries and be more productive.
4. Form study groups: You can form study groups with your classmates and friends from different majors. Study with them on a Zoom call or through other virtual gathering platforms. This will help you stay motivated during your study sessions, and you also get to spend time with your friends.
5. Stay motivated: I know this is an extreme challenge, especially with pandemic fatigue and the stress of finals, but it is very important to find activities that help you rejuvenate and stay motivated. Consider reading a book, calling a friend, listening to some music, meditating or journaling. Just find something that works for you. You will concentrate better and be more productive during your study sessions.
You’ve worked hard all semester, and it is imperative you practice self-care and avoid stressful situations. I hope these tips help make your transition to online smoother and that you finish the semester stronger!
