Each year, the IUPUI Office of Alumni Relations honors 100 outstanding undergraduate students who demonstrate excellence in three categories—academic excellence, campus leadership and community engagement.
This year, seven Kelley School of Business Indianapolis undergraduate students were included in that list: Ryan Fraser, Andrea Hanas, Nidhi Ramanathan, Jarrett Rozzi, Michila Weddle, Meghan Ziegler and Jaci Zook.
Of the 100 students who’ve demonstrated excellence, Ryan Fraser was named one of the Top 10 outstanding undergraduate students at IUPUI — Congratulations, Ryan!
We spoke with each of our Top 100 recipients about their favorite Kelley moments, favorite Kelley classes and professors and how they feel Kelley has prepared them for a career in business and beyond.
What has been your favorite experience so far at Kelley? I have had so many amazing experiences at Kelley. However, my top experience is traveling abroad to London during spring break.
What has been your favorite class and why? My favorite class will always be financial accounting with professor David Farber. The class was mentally challenging and kept me engaged. Professor Farber did a fantastic job of connecting classroom concepts with the real world, and I felt genuinely inspired after completing the class.
If you had to pick one (or a few!) professor (s) who has/have impacted you the most while at Kelley, who would it be? Many professors have positively impacted me throughout my four years at Kelley. However, one in particular who has helped push me towards success is Michael Steinhardt. Professor Steinhardt taught my first finance course and helped me realize and identify my passion for corporate finance.
Where do you see yourself after you graduate? I am excited to start my career in corporate finance at Elanco Animal Health after graduation. I am fascinated by the level of strategy and cooperative teamwork which is at the core of corporate finance.
Favorite activity/extracurricular activity that you have been involved in while at Kelley? I have really enjoyed my involvement with case competitions. I have been able to compete in four of them, and I have met students from around the world at these competitions. Each has given me the opportunity to work with diverse teams and hone my presentation and problem-solving skills.
What is your advice to current Kelley students? Keep everything in perspective. Throughout your life, it’s important to remember that you are not defined by your failures or even by your success. Don’t get too low when a test does not go your way or get too high when you achieve a goal. Just stay steady and keep cranking.
What is your Kelley moment? I would say that my biggest Kelley moment would be receiving the call for the job offer at Elanco Animal Health, where I will be a financial analyst upon graduation. It was the culmination of hundreds of smaller Kelley moments and the moment I ultimately came to college to achieve.
What has been your favorite experience so far at Kelley?
My favorite Kelley experience was studying abroad in London during my sophomore year spring break. It was an incredible experience and I made some amazing friends. The study abroad was a once in a lifetime learning opportunity, and I can’t wait to go back to Europe!
What has been your favorite class and why?
It was difficult to pick just one class because I truly have had some of the best classes and best professors at IUPUI. My favorite class thus far is Team Dynamics & Leadership with professor Charlotte Westerhaus-Renfrow. I chose a non-accounting or finance course as my favorite class because I gained insight into new ideas and new ways of thinking. Professor Westerhaus-Renfrow is an amazing lecturer, and I learned how to approach situations with a new perspective.
If you had to pick one (or a few!) professor (s) who has/have impacted you the most while at Kelley, who would it be?
This is an incredibly difficult question. I have not encountered a professor at IUPUI who did not take in interest in my both educational and personal growth. The Kelley professors show genuine concern in my education and development as both a student and student-athlete. Some of my favorite professors include: Dr. Demetra Andrews, Diane Sturek and Michael Steinhardt. They have all provided me with new business knowledge that I will forever be grateful for.
Where do you see yourself after you graduate?
After graduation, I hope to stay in the Indianapolis area, and I plan to pursue a career in public accounting.
Favorite activity/extracurricular activity that you have been involved in while at Kelley?
My favorite extracurricular activity that I have been involved in while at Kelley is the IUPUI Women’s Swimming and Diving team. I gained a second family when I joined this team, and would not be where I am today without the support of my coaches, teammates, and the athletic staff. Balancing a rigorous training schedule and course load has taught me to stay disciplined to allow success in both my academic and athletic performance.
What is your advice to current Kelley students?
My advice to current Kelley students is to get involved and to utilize the city of Indianapolis! The Kelley School of Business Indianapolis provides so many unique learning opportunities in and of itself, but with our campus in the heart of a large city, there are so many more opportunities to gain hands-on learning experiences and to expand your learning outside of the classroom.
What is your Kelley moment?
My Kelley moment is successfully completing Honors I-CORE! Through the Kelley Honors program, I have met so many great people and professors, and I truly enjoyed spending an entire semester with some of the brightest students and best professors at IUPUI.
What has been your favorite experience so far at Kelley?
My study abroad program to Argentina during spring break of 2019 is one of my most favorite experiences. It was a lovely trip learning about social responsibility from a corporate standpoint through the lens of organizations operating in Buenos Aires, and I learned alongside classmates who shared the same passion for service-learning and traveling as I did. In addition to serving a rural elementary school in Buenos Aires, I was able to learn about corporate social responsibility while getting a taste of the beautiful Argentinian culture. This study abroad experience gave me memories to treasure and a new perspective of responsible business operations on which I will draw from in my corporate career in the future.
What has been your favorite class and why?
I enjoy classes that enhance my rationale and challenge my mind to help me grow my critical thinking skills. The strategy class with professor Lisa Ketner has been my favorite; it covered significant aspects of corporate strategy and business development. Professor Ketner is a delightful instructor who drew from her industry experiences while teaching and creatively designed the course to be intriguing, enriching and comprehensive. This class reinstated my deep interest in this area and has further developed my critical thinking, brainstorming and problem-solving abilities that I can utilize in my career.
If you had to pick one (or a few) professor (s) who has/have impacted you the most while at Kelley, who would it be?
I have been taught by some remarkable professors who have inspired me in different ways during my time at Kelley but if I had to pick one, it would be professor Michael Steinhardt, who was my instructor for both I-Core Finance and Intermediate Corporate Finance. He is driven to create a meaningful learning experience for his students and constantly works to improve student experiences at Kelley. He has been a great source of support and encouragement for me throughout my journey at Kelley and through his mentorship, helped me recognize my value. Witnessing his passion, enthusiasm and dedication toward his profession inspires me to bring such zeal to whatever I pursue in my life.
Where do you see yourself after you graduate?
Having pursued a double major in accounting and finance, I aim to utilize my knowledge and skill sets to work in the financial services sector. I look forward to making worthwhile contributions in my field of work, that will make a positive difference in society at large.
Favorite activity/extracurricular activity that you have been involved in while at Kelley?
Kelley has given me wonderful opportunities to explore my potential as a business student outside of academics, but the most memorable of them all has to be my participation in case competitions. I have been fortunate to represent Kelley in three national case competitions, all of which brought me to new places, working to solve complex business cases and competing with other schools from across the nation. The Conexus Case Competition was the first case competition I participated in, held at the office of Rolls Royce in Indianapolis. We competed with 22 other teams, and my team won the runner’s up position for proposing a creative solution for a supply-chain case.
I also participated in the first Gregg M. Sherrill Supply Chain Case Competition hosted by Kelley Indy, and I had a lovely experience in that one, solving a business problem with some amazing teammates. We won the competition! The last one was the GM-Wayne State Supply Chain Case Competition in Detroit, Michigan, at the General Motors headquarters. It was an incredible experience to be in a team with some great friends, proposing our ideas to a complex business case while networking with students and industry professionals in the beautiful city of Detroit. These experiences have been very enriching both personally and professionally, all of which I will cherish after graduation.
What is your advice to current Kelley students?
Your experience at college is what you make of it! Make the most of your time at Kelley and at IUPUI as you explore your individuality, interests and potential in your field of study. Be willing to step out of your comfort zone and involve yourself in activities outside your classroom. Through my experiences as an honors student, a national Model United Nations delegate, the president of Kelley Indianapolis Cares and as the student-leader of yoga sessions at IUPUI, I have gained immensely valuable opportunities to recognize my passions and grow my skill sets — All because I chose to involve myself in such avenues. Take the initiative to explore new avenues, as you never know what opportunities await you!

I gained amazing insights into entrepreneurship and leadership, and I was invigorated with a spirit of excellence that I channel into all my endeavors. I was able to present the best version of myself at the conference because of Kelley; the school has truly shaped me into a confident, driven and hardworking individual who aspires to reach greater heights in all facets of life.

What is your Kelley moment?
While interviewing an accountant for a X220 assignment, I was able to secure an interview for an internship. I am currently completing this internship and loving my experience!
What has been your favorite experience so far at Kelley?
One of my favorite and most memorable experiences during my time at Kelley was studying abroad in the United Kingdom through the BREXIT, Business, and Brits Program. My time in London was incredible from touring historic landmarks to visiting businesses; the trip really opened my eyes to the global economy and the key role of international marketing. The trip sparked my interest in global news and events and their worldwide affect.
What has been your favorite class and why?
I would have to say my favorite class has been Introduction to Oceanography with professor Kathy Licht. I gained a deeper understanding and appreciation for the beautiful oceans and our planet. The environmental service project component of this service-learning course was the beginning of my interest in conservation and environmental activism. Dr. Licht outlined the effects of climate change on our world and motivated me to make changes in my life, as well as to launch a community recycling program to aid in the initiative to help Indianapolis become a more sustainable city.
If you had to pick one (or a few) professor (s) who has/have impacted you the most while at Kelley, who would it be?
Professor David Farber taught my Financial Accounting course and made it one of the most engaging, challenging and educational courses. Even as a marketing major, I learned useful information about financial statements and business operations. Professor Farber was a wonderful professor and motivated me to keep learning and giving my best. He was a huge encouragement and helped me to believe in myself and to know that with perseverance and hard work I could be successful and thrive in my academic pursuits.
Where do you see yourself after you graduate?
When I graduate in May, I plan to work for a state park as an event and marketing coordinator. I love spending time outside and planning events that engage with the community, so a park was an ideal fit.
Favorite activity/extracurricular activity that you have been involved in while at Kelley?
Being involved in Kelley Indianapolis Student Government the past three years has been a rewarding experience. It allowed me to connect with so many incredible students and organizations. From planning events to working with student organizations, being part of the officer team has taught me many useful skills. I think a highlight from student government was the Spring Awards Breakfast, where student government recognized and thanked outstanding professors and students who are making a positive impact on campus.
What is your advice to current Kelley students?
The Kelley curriculum can be challenging and overwhelming at times; don’t lose sight of your goals during those times. Also, give some of your time to be involved and volunteer in the community, as this always helps to give me balance and perspective during the difficult times and takes my focus off myself. That being said, don’t over commit yourself and be realistic about what you can handle. Just enjoy the experience.
What is your Kelley moment?
Being on the verge of graduating and reflecting on my Kelley experience, I would say my Kelley moment is this: being recognized as a Top 100 student. School and academics have always been a struggle for me, and it’s rewarding to know that with much perseverance I will be graduating with this distinction and my Kelley degree in May.
What has been your favorite experience so far at Kelley?
My favorite experiences at Kelley have undoubtedly been my three study abroad opportunities – spring break 2017 in London, England; summer 2018 in Seville, Spain; and May 2019 in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen, China.
What has been your favorite class and why?
One of my favorite classes was professor Judith Wright’s honors commercial law class, which inspired me to consider law school! Her explanations and class discussions always made everything relevant and interesting. She didn’t mind when we brought up things that weren’t strictly part of the syllabus, which made students feel empowered to learn things important and relevant to their interests and future career fields. The final project, where we researched and presented a “real” case with a partner was one of my favorite homework assignments, and our final presentation in the Indiana Statehouse in a real courtroom in front of a judge was one of my favorite memories at IUPUI! I am using my interest in law by pursuing a future in law enforcement with the DOJ, which is partially due to this course.
If you had to pick one (or a few!) professor (s) who has/have impacted you the most while at Kelley, who would it be?
There have been so many incredible professors during my four years at Kelley! It’s hard to narrow it down. However, some professors I would really like to thank would be:
Elizabeth Malatestinic, for helping me enjoy one of my majors (HR) as much as possible. Her incredible knowledge, down-to-earth nature and her genuineness kept me interested. What she teaches is real-world knowledge, and she will always research an answer to a question she doesn’t know immediately (which is rare). She is also passionate about helping students succeed outside the classroom through case competitions or internships. I received personalized emails from her if she thought I would be a good fit for an opportunity! Her connections with SHRM made our local chapter incredibly beneficial for students, too.
Jonathan Metzger, for making J402 much more relevant and interesting than I thought it could be! His use of guest speakers really showed us how to apply course concepts to real-world businesses, and he never wasted our time by teaching us things we had already learned.
Emily Murphy, for being the best introduction to Kelley I could ask for! She is fun but no-nonsense, and she helped make my transition during Summer Bridge smooth and engaging. Pre COVID-19, I used to bump into her in the hallways, and she always checked in on my progress.
Charlotte Westerhaus-Renfrow, for packing so much incredible material into just five days for Effective Negotiations. It is one of the classes where I felt like every single thing I learned could actually be used in my future, but I never really felt like I was “learning” because she made the class so engaging, interactive and realistic. (She also helped lead the China study abroad program.)
Lin Zheng, for her incredible China study abroad program to Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. It was definitely the furthest out of my comfort zone I’ve ever been, but I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing the advantages and disadvantages of doing business in China while simultaneously immersing myself in a culture wholly different from my own.
Where do you see yourself after you graduate?
I will be working for the Department of Justice in an as yet unspecified role.
Favorite activity/extracurricular activity that you have been involved in while at Kelley?
I have done many incredible things during my time at Kelley, but one of my most memorable is my involvement in Kelley Indianapolis Student Government (KISG). KISG was the first organization I joined at IUPUI, and I’ve actively participated in it since my first semester in fall 2016. I served as an underclassman delegate, the executive vice president and the president. Through this, I had the opportunity to make many friends, learn practical leadership skills and apply concepts from my coursework in a real setting. I also helped pioneer many changes and learned a lot more about IUPUI and student organizations, which served me well in my other organizations and leadership rolls across IUPUI.
What is your advice to current Kelley students?
Take advantage of every opportunity! I’ve held internships in office administration for a non-profit in Indiana; marketing for a small, international tech firm in Spain; and human resources for the federal government in Washington DC – none of them were exactly what I planned to do for my career, but they provided me with a much wider range of understanding of different business environments and they taught me many transferable skills. Don’t limit yourself in internships or on-campus activities – All experiences are learning experiences. Plus, I never thought about working for the federal government, but because of my willingness to step outside my comfort zone and explore non-traditional employment opportunities, I actually found my dream workplace!
What is your Kelley moment?
My Kelley moment was standing in front of peers from several other universities, holding a giant check for $3,000 with four of my best friends: We’d secured a second-place win for the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis at the Krannert HR Case Competition in November 2019. I loved transferring my in-class learning to a real-life scenario and coming together with fellow high-achieving students to create, present and defend our plan.
