INDIANAPOLIS — Kelley School of Business Dean Idalene “Idie” Kesner and Associate Dean Philip T. Powell have named Sam Tiras faculty chair of the Graduate Accounting Programs at IUPUI.
An associate professor of accounting, Tiras has taught at the Kelley School since January 2015. Currently, he teaches accounting and financial statement analysis to students in both the top-ranked Evening MBA Program and Graduate Accounting Programs (GAP).
Tiras’ research focuses on financial accounting, implications of auditing on financial reporting and corporate governance. He travels across the globe to conduct research, most recently on auditing, financial reporting and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). He has published in Review of Accounting Studies, The Accounting Review, Contemporary Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy and Journal of Business Finance and Accounting.
“We thank Sam for accepting this position within the Kelley School on the IUPUI campus,” said Powell. “Sam’s vision and energy will build upon a strong foundation for the graduate accounting programs. His academic leadership experience will serve us well, as he expands our regional accounting footprint.”
Tiras is a two-time recipient of the Evening MBA Teaching Excellence Award, an honor voted on by Evening MBA students. Before coming to the Kelley School, he served as the KPMG Endowed Professor and chair of the Accounting Department at Louisiana State University. He received his PhD in accounting from The Ohio State University.
“I look forward to serving as faculty chair for the Graduate Accounting Programs,” said Tiras. “We are in a unique position to directly serve businesses and organizations in central Indiana and downtown Indianapolis, and I look forward to helping our master’s programs grow.
“Our mission is to serve Indiana, and we plan to do this through our master’s programs and with the addition of three new graduate certificates in internal audit, tax and accounting. I look forward to helping students and young professionals position themselves for success by giving them the skills they need–not just to begin a career, but to build it.”
Tiras succeeds Reed Smith, Katz, Sapper & Miller Faculty Fellow and professor of accounting, who stepped down from the faculty chair position to resume full-time teaching and research.
