INDIANAPOLIS — Kelley School of Business Dean Idalene “Idie” Kesner and Associate Dean Philip T. Powell have named Christopher O.L.H. Porter faculty chair of the Business of Medicine Physician MBA Program beginning June 1, 2018.
Porter succeeds Anthony D. Cox, who steps down at the end of May from the position he first assumed in 2013.
“Tony transformed a new Kelley School venture at IUPUI into the nation’s best physician-only MBA program, and today we’re helping physicians navigate the changing world of healthcare,” said Powell.
“Over the past five years, Tony shepherded over 200 physician leaders to their MBAs, maintaining a laser focus on the quality of the student experience. Generous gifts to the program from each graduating class and high demand for additional courses from alums are testament to his success.
“Under Tony’s leadership, Kelley Physician MBA students were immersed in global experiences in India, Germany, Italy, Cuba, and the Czech Republic, allowing physicians to learn more about healthcare in each country. Physician MBAs also traveled to Washington, DC, to learn about healthcare regulation and policies affecting them on a daily basis. Additionally, the school now offers customized programs beyond the MBA for local organizations and companies, all thanks to Tony’s leadership. We thank him for his service and wish him well as he returns to full-time scholarly research.”
“The success of the Kelley Business of Medicine Physician MBA Program has been the product of a true team effort of our outstanding faculty, staff and physician MBA scholars,” said Cox. “Under Christopher’s leadership, I am confident the program will continue to rise to new heights, producing a new generation of physician leaders who will transform the American healthcare system for the benefit of patients and society.”
Christopher O.L.H. Porter is a professor of management and Kelley Venture Fellow and has taught leadership and ethics in the Kelley Business of Medicine Physician MBA Program since its inception in 2013. Porter serves as associate editor for the Journal of Management and the Africa Journal of Management, and he is a healthcare scholar, analyzing teamwork within medical teams in hospital emergency rooms.
“I’m honored to serve as the faculty chair for the Physician MBA program, especially given its importance in Kelley’s overall portfolio of programs and the impact it has on the larger society,” said Porter. “Both healthcare and business face unique challenges and opportunities in the years ahead as the two transform and innovate. I look forward to leading this program as we anticipate and respond to those challenges and opportunities, while creating physician leaders and change agents to drive effective transformation.
“There is no other experience in the world that compares to the one offered through the Kelley Physician MBA. The healthcare community—not just locally, but nationally and internationally—recognizes this fact. I hope to build on our prior success and reputation to not only ensure that Kelley remains the first school healthcare professionals think about for physician leadership, but also to extend our reach into healthcare more broadly. My overarching goal is to ensure that Kelley continues to be the hub for those interested in exploring and generating new insights from the intersection of business and medicine.”
“Christopher’s expertise in team leadership and organizational dynamics will help guide our program forward as we strive to transform the business of medicine,” said Powell. “We look forward to Christopher’s leadership as we build upon the Physician MBA program’s national reputation for innovation, academic excellence and physician-centered learning.”
