In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis is highlighting Kelley women all March.
Here is a short snapshot of just a few of our undergraduate club leaders:
Shelby Caulk, BS’17, President of Kelley Indianapolis Student Government
Kelley Biz Blog: What advice do you have for other women looking to get involved at Kelley? What advice would you give other women also working toward a business degree?
Shelby: Within the Kelley School of Business, we have equal representation between men and women governing our student organizations! I would recommend attending some of the call-out meetings for the organizations to figure out which one you’d like to get involved with. Many people are worried that being involved with an organization will be a large time commitment, but it doesn’t have to be! Even if you don’t hold an executive position within the organization, being a member is still a great way to meet new people and network with potential employers.
Kelley Biz Blog: Why did you choose to get involved, and what has that added to your Kelley experience?
Shelby: I first got involved in the Kelley Indianapolis Student Government during my freshman year because I really wanted to give back to Kelley in the same way that it has given so much to me. The organization allowed me to surround myself with some of the top leaders in Kelley, who mentored and guided me through my first two years.
As the current president of the organization, it has given me the chance to provide support for all Kelley organizations while also representing the school, which means so much to me.
I’ve had the opportunity to get Kelley involved with Relay for Life and worked with my team to become a sponsor for Jagathon. I’ve never been more grateful for an organization, and I hope that encourages current and future Kelley students to get involved!
Lindsey Gray, BS’17, President at Delta Sigma Pi – Kappa Sigma Chapter
Kelley Biz Blog: What advice do you have for other women looking to get involved at Kelley, and what advice do you have for other women working toward a business degree?
Lindsey: My advice to you is that college is what you make it. The amount that you put into it, you will receive the same amount back. I highly encourage becoming involved in at least one student organization in Kelley, because the opportunities that come from them are too many to count. While you are involved in these organizations, you are also expanding your networking which is something we are taught day one. With this network, you can put your foot in the door to possible internships or job opportunities. You never know what could come out of any situation.
Kelley Biz Blog: Why did you choose to get involved and how has that added to your Kelley experience?
Lindsey: I chose to become involved at Kelley because I wanted to make the most out of my college experience. Throughout my time at Kelley, I have been involved in Delta Sigma Pi, Kelley Indianapolis Cares, Kelley Ambassadors, Kelley Indianapolis Student Government and Jagathon (IUPUI’s Dance Marathon). Without these organizations, I honestly do not know what my four years of college would have been like. These organizations have given me professional and personal growth, leadership opportunities and countless friendships. I would not trade a single thing.
Courtney Imlay, BS’18, Kelley Indianapolis Cares Co-President
Kelley Biz Blog: What advice do you have for other women looking to get involved at Kelley, and also for other women working toward a business degree?
Courtney: The best advice I could give is do not be afraid to try something new out. The transition to college is definitely a challenging one, but getting involved as soon as you can will make that transition go a whole lot smoother.
I would advise women to try out all of the Kelley clubs because it could help you decide which major is the perfect fit for you. I think it is also important to give back to your community and during college is the best time for you to do that. Get involved whether it be in one club or multiple: the friendships that you make in these clubs will last you a lifetime.
Kelley Biz Blog: Why did you choose to get involved, and what has that added to your Kelley experience?
Courtney: I would say that the best thing that I did on campus was to get involved in as many organizations as possible. Being a business student, I couldn’t think of a better way to give back to Kelley than to support their clubs. I have been involved with Kelley Indianapolis Cares since my freshman year at IUPUI. I have been in multiple leadership roles with my current role as co-president. I have a huge passion for volunteering and giving back to others. I couldn’t think of any better way to do than this than with other Kelley students. I really like the mission that this club has, and I am thankful for the many opportunities it has provided me so far in the three years I have been at IUPUI.
I am also a member of the Accounting Association, which has allowed me to network with a significant amount of people for my future. Both of these clubs have shaped me into a business woman and have provided me with a tremendous amount of opportunities — which has made my Kelley experience a great one.
Victoria Sefcsik, BS’18, President of Operations and Supply Chain Organization, SamStrong Foundation Dance Co-Director
Kelley Biz Blog: What advice do you have for other women looking to get involved at Kelley and also for other women working toward a business degree?
Victoria: My advice for women looking to get involved in Kelley and looking toward getting a business degree is to attend every networking event offered by Kelley and the student organizations on campus. My first internship within my major was with J.B. Hunt, and I was able to apply by regularly attending Operations and Supply Chain Club meetings and career fairs. Through this, I got to know the recruiters and was able to work as their ICS Intern learning about the logistics field.
Kelley Biz Blog: Why did you choose to get involved and how has that added to your Kelley experience?
Victoria: I’ve chosen to get involved with Kelley, specifically the Operations and Supply Chain Club because I wanted to broaden my understanding of my major. Through this organization I have made countless connections and have had the opportunity to serve as secretary and president. I’ve been able to help improve the internal logistics of the organization and help create a resource on campus for students interested in supply chain. There are countless opportunities to get involved with Kelley and I highly encourage everyone to do just that!
