On Monday, September 29, the IU Kelley School of Business will be joining our IUPUI community in observing World Heart Day. We invite you to lace up your walking shoes and join Dean Cochran, faculty, and staff of the Kelley School of Business, as well as students, faculty, staff and alumni from all around IUPUI, as we walk an easy 1 mile route from campus to Monument Circle.
As part of one of the leading health sciences campuses in the United States, we are keenly aware that Indiana ranks 41 out of 50 states in overall health and 39 out of 50 in deaths due to heart disease. All of us at IUPUI are committed to improving those numbers. On September 29, we’ll “walk the talk” as one community, all of us coming from different disciplines, but united in our desire to use our knowledge and skills to bring about better health for people in Indiana and beyond.
To be part of this campus-wide walk, please be at Wood Plaza Fountain at 11:45 a.m. on Monday, September 29. We’ll walk as a group along the Cultural Trail to Monument Circle, just 1.1 miles away. At the Circle, we’ll join up with other walkers from around the city and hear brief remarks from Indianapolis’ First Lady Winnie Ballard. VIPs who will be participating in the brief program at Monument Circle include Tina Pagano (wife of Colts coach Chuck Pagano), TV news journalist Debbie Knox, philanthropist Marianne Glick, and Allison Melangton, president of Indianapolis’ 2012 Super Bowl Committee. Click here to find a map of our route, along with more information about the event.
Each year, 17.3 million people lose their lives to cardiovascular disease. According to the World Heart Federation, many of these deaths could be avoided if four main risk factors – tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and harmful use of alcohol – are controlled. To show your commitment to your own heart health, and the health of all Hoosiers, please walk with us on September 29. At IUPUI we are #DoneWith41.
