A junior finance and international studies major at the Kelley School of Business Indianapolis will spend part of next semester in London as one of about 50 students across the country to intern in the London finance and banking industry.
Whitney Kent was selected to participate in the prestigious internship program coordinated through Indiana University and Arcadia University’s College of Global Studies. She will relocate to London and participate in the program from Jan. 2-April 16.
“I’m really excited, and I think this is going to be a wonderful opportunity,” Kent said. “I will be working in a finance internship, and I hope to gain some great international experience.”
As her new journey approaches, Kent said she has been busy learning as much as she can about the culture and nature of business in London. She has spoken with former students who have participated in the program to get perspective and tips on how to make the most of her experience.
The IU-Arcadia program involves a competitive application process. Kent was required to submit an interest essay and orally defend it before a committee. Students seeking to participate in the banking and finance industries were required to have at least a 3.5 GPA and to have completed prerequisite business courses.
The internship will involve three workdays a week as well as coursework at Arcadia University. Students will earn 16 credit hours during the three-month program. Housing is established through IU, and students will be housed near other American students.
Kent expects to learn in the near future what company she will be paired with in London, but she remains confident the experience will prove invaluable as she pursues a career as an international financial consultant. Her first step will be a return to Kelley Indianapolis after her 2012 graduation date to pursue a JD/MBA in the Evening MBA program.
